OMINOUS CLOUD

A hot summer day, Crayfish Lake, Northwestern Ontario. My father and I were enjoying an afternoon of fishing during which one extra dark cloud appeared. We thought we were in the path of a refreshing rainfall.

BIG SPASHES

The raindrops seemed to be making a much larger splash than I had anticipated. A few loud clunks on the floor of the boat indicated we were in for more than just a passing rain shower.

TAKE COVER

I dropped my fishing rod (the line can be seen on the left half of the photo) and told my father to cover his head with his life jacket.

RAINING GOLF BALLS

I was trying to take photos with one hand while covering my camera and head and protecting my dog (Albany) with the other.

DEAFENING

The thunderous roar of the hail hitting the boat and the surrounding water was not unlike that which would be heard if you were standing next to a fast moving freight train.

DEBRIS

I turned 180 degrees to take this photo as we drifted towards an island. The spots visible on the upper half are leaves, acorns and pieces of branches ripped off the trees.

HAIL SHAFT

The storm cell passed through within 2 or 3 minutes. I would estimate its swath was half a mile wide. Back to fishing!
